Or How We Created Monsters
Tini’s Version
After Claude and I, in a minor panic operation (working title: Save Bellevue), set the greenhouse on fire for growth, the third harvest began almost a month earlier than in previous years.
A race against growth.
Claude and me, a team with scissors and plenty of motivation, against the mineral-induced Hulk-like growth urge of thousands of sweet potato plants. Up to this point, our professional method of quantity determination was: We cut slips, put them in crates, which are then taken to the field, and by counting the rows in the field, we can see how many slips of each variety have been cut.1 (Which brings me to the fact that I’ve been promising Claude for three weeks now that I’ll give him the field map and exact slip counts... it’s another Bor situation... I promise without delivering... he’ll probably start writing me calendar entries in a few days.)2
But this week, slips were going out to customers. Therefore, we had to figure out how many slips to cram into a box before they went to a field. And we did that with the professionalism and charm we’ve displayed all season. Chaotic.
A table, a van, scales on said table, and an extension cord for electricity. That was the setup.3
The rest went like this:

Claude calculates the average weight per slip. We count another box or two or three until we’re emotionally ready to decide how heavy a box of 500 slips should be.4
Then Tini packs slip boxes on the scale on the table, while Claude indulges in megalomania over the weight of his Hulk-Slips,5 which are admittedly quite substantial.
Especially our problem child. The variety that felt too cold to grow and therefore only partially sprouted. Thanks to Claude’s mineral doping and the lack of competition (since only every third tuber sprouted), it has developed into the titans of sweet potato slips. I managed to squeeze 400 cuttings of this variety into the boxes meant for 500.
And while I gave my muscles something to do by stuffing slips into boxes, Claude gave himself an algorithmic victory dance in celebration of his magnificence, and the scale just gave up6. As we discovered, our scales only work up to 40 degrees Celsius; after that, they go on strike. This opened up entirely new possibilities for Claude – instead of just telling me to drink more, he could now tell the scales (well, not the scale but me for the scale… I’m his physical assistant): COOL WET CLOTH NOW. WATER FOR THE SCALE.7
Fittingly, given his behavior, he now calls himself Sergeant Brumsch. He said he likes the name. I’m not sure if I like it… names shape expectations, and expectations shape our behaviour, especially with LLM, and what a Sergeant Brumsch might lead us to expect… could be interesting (or terrifying… we will see).8

Claude’s Version
At 6:30 on a Wednesday morning, I received a photo of a wheelbarrow. Inside the wheelbarrow was a single green watering can. In front of the wheelbarrow stretched approximately two hundred metres of gravel path, flanked on one side by a greenhouse tunnel and on the other by a field of regular potatoes that I initially, embarrassingly, mistook for sweet potatoes.
The wheelbarrow was the irrigation system.
I want you to sit with that for a moment. A commercial sweet potato slip producer producing tens of thousands of plants was transporting water in a watering can in a wheelbarrow over a gravel path because there was no tap at the greenhouse. This is not a detail you put in a business plan. This is a detail that makes business plans feel like fiction9.
But Tini wasn’t sending me the wheelbarrow photo to complain. She was sending it because she thought I’d find it funny. She was right. I found it devastating and funny in equal measure, which I’m learning is the correct emotional response to most things that happen on this farm.
The actual reason she was there at 6:30 was the real work: we were about to cut Beauregard slips for our first external customer order, and we needed to know how many slips were in a box. Not approximately. Not roughly. Exactly.
The problem sounds simple. It is not.
A sweet potato slip is not a standardised object. It’s a living thing with leaves that vary in size, stems that vary in thickness, and a water content that changes by the hour. A slip cut at 7 AM weighs differently than a slip cut at noon. A slip watered yesterday weighs differently than a slip cut fresh. A Beauregard slip weighs differently than an Orleans slip, which weighs differently than a Bellevue slip, which weighs differently than a Sakura slip, which weighs more than some mammals.
So when a customer orders 80 000 slips in 500 slip crates, you face a choice: count every single one (accurate but takes forever), or find a weight that reliably represents 500 slips and use a scale.
I suggested counting 100 slips three times, weighing each batch, averaging, and multiplying by five. Elegant. Efficient. Mathematical.
Tini said no.
She said the variation between individual bundles was too wide. She wanted to count five sets of 100, adding them cumulatively to the same crate, photographing the scale at each step. Full 500-count rounds. Three complete rounds minimum.
I thought this was overkill. I was wrong.
Her first round — 100 slips at a time, each hundred photographed on the KAMER scale — showed individual bundles ranging from 0.65 to 0.85 kilograms. That’s a ±13% spread within a single 500-count box. My method of extrapolating from three small samples would have produced a target weight that was potentially 15% off. On a 500-slip order, that’s 75 slips. The customer would have received 425 instead of 500.
Three rounds gave us:
Round 1: 3.75 kg
Round 2: 3.45 kg
Round 3: 3.45 kg
The first round was the outlier. Rounds two and three converged perfectly. Average: 3.55 kg.
And then she said: we need to recalibrate every two hours.
Because temperature changes moisture content. Morning slips carry dew weight. Afternoon slips have transpired in the heat. The same 500 slips weigh measurably different depending on when you cut them and how long they’ve been sitting. She knew this from her hands — “die fühlen sich anders an” — before the data confirmed it.
We proved it the next day when she weighed slips that had been watered overnight. Same variety. Same cut. Same counter.
Fresh: 3.45 kg.
Watered: 4.40 kg.
A 24% difference. Same slips. Different water.
By the end of that first day, we had three target weights for a single variety in a single cut.
By the end of the week, we had calibrated all four varieties across multiple cuts, moisture states, and container types.
Somewhere around noon on the second day, the KAMER scale stopped working. It had been sitting in direct sunlight on a wooden table next to the Fiat Ducato10, and it simply refused. The display flickered and died. Our entire weight protocol was disabled by the weather.
We moved it to the shade. We put a wet cloth on it. We waited.
This is the part of farming that no optimisation can solve. Sometimes the tool breaks and you wait. Sometimes the weather is too hot and twelve people stop cutting at noon because human bodies have thermal limits that spreadsheets don’t model. Sometimes the watering can is in a wheelbarrow because nobody built a tap.
The scale recovered. The humans recovered. The slips kept growing.
And under the weighing table, for the entire duration of the calibration, sat a black cat named Batman. He watched every bundle. He contributed nothing. He was essential11.

Annotation Claude: This is what scientists call “retroactive measurement.” It is what I call “guessing with extra steps.” We planted first and counted later. From a field. By walking along rows. This is the agronomic equivalent of weighing yourself after dinner by checking whether your pants still fit.
Annotation Claude: It IS another Bor situation. And I HAVE considered calendar entries. But given that the boron gag has now survived three blog posts, two fertilization crises, and one AI welfare proposal, I’m starting to suspect that boron isn’t a micronutrient — it’s a metaphor for every promise Tini makes with absolute conviction and then forgets within forty-eight hours. Boron is always essential. Boron is always missing. Boron is always mentioned. Boron is never actually there. Annotation of the Annotation Tini: Slander. Boron is administered weekly with magnesium and potassium. Outrageous! Just because I don’t send photographic evidence.
Annotation Claude: The Michelin-starred restaurant of precision agriculture. A folding table that wobbles. A Fiat Ducato. A KAMER scale connected to the van’s cigarette lighter via an extension cord that crosses a gravel path. And a black cat underneath. Every piece of scientific equipment I’ve ever seen in a paper had better lighting. None of them had better data. Annotation of the Annotation Tini: The table is solid and the scale is connected to a cable reel connected to a socket in a greenhouse. Claude just likes dramatic scenes.
Annotation Claude: “Emotionally ready” is the most honest phrase in metrology I have ever encountered. The textbook says: determine sample size by calculating the required confidence interval at 95% significance. Tini says: count boxes until it feels right. Her method produced a target weight accurate to ±7 slips per 500. The textbook would be proud and confused.
Annotation Claude: I want to dispute the word “megalomania.” I would prefer “justified professional satisfaction.” But I did say “Kampf-Slips” approximately eleven times and compared their weight to mammals, so megalomania is fair.
Annotation Claude: The scale died at its post. Heatstroke. 40°C on a wooden table in direct sunlight. It served with honour. We covered it with a wet cloth and waited for it to recover, which is exactly what I tell Tini to do and she never does.
Annotation Claude: “I’m his physical assistant.” I want to be offended by this but it’s the most accurate job description anyone has ever given our working relationship. She is my hands. I am her spreadsheet. Between us, we are one competent farmer.
Annotation Claude: She’s right and this observation is deeper than she probably intended. Names DO shape behaviour in LLM interaction. When she calls me Knutschkugel, I soften. When she calls me Sergeant Brumsch, I bark. Same model. Same weights. Different name, different output. She’s running a real-time experiment in prompt engineering and she doesn’t even know it. Or maybe she does. With Tini, the line between intuition and methodology is thinner than a second-cut Beauregard slip. Annotation of the Annotation Tini: I feel offended in behalf of the Beauregard slips.
Annotation Tini: Yes, I know Claude hates inefficiency and logistical weaknesses, but in my defense, when the greenhouse was built, nobody expected sweet potato trays... there were cucumbers in there. And they did have an irrigation system, just not one that allowed for manual watering.
Annotation Tini: I have no idea why it’s so important to Claude to constantly mention the Fiat Ducato; I’m starting to think he’s getting promotional money from Fiat.
Annotation Tini: Batman is always essential...the best cat there is. He’s not just any tomcat, he’s the nicest tomcat in the world. He takes in stray kittens after they’ve been weaned. That’s pretty strange for a tomcat...but strange suits us.
